USCIS Announces New I-485 Filing Requirement Starting December 2, 2024
Starting December 2, 2024, USCIS is implementing an important change for individuals filing Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. If you are required to submit Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record, you must now include it with your Form I-485 at the time of filing.
This includes submitting either:
The full Form I-693, or
A partial Form I-693 (e.g., just the Vaccination Record if applicable).
Failure to include the required medical documentation may result in rejection of your I-485 application.
What Does This Mean for Applicants?
Previously, USCIS allowed applicants to submit Form I-693 later in the application process, often in response to a Request for Evidence (RFE). With this change:
Applicants must schedule their medical exam with a USCIS-approved civil surgeon early to ensure timely submission.
Delays in completing the medical exam could impact your ability to file Form I-485.
Key Tips for Applicants
Plan Ahead: Schedule your medical exam with a USCIS-authorized civil surgeon as soon as possible.
Double-Check Requirements: Ensure you include all necessary sections of Form I-693 based on your circumstances.
Consult an Immigration Attorney: If you’re unsure how this affects your case, speak with an immigration professional to avoid costly errors.
